Personal History Andrew Jacob Chapman, AJ to his family and close friends, was born in London during the Spring of 2360, the only child of Marie and Stuart Chapman. His mother was a Medical Officer at a Starfleet Medical Complex in London while his father was a Tactical Analyst at Starfleet Command in San Francisco.

Chapman grew up in London, where the family lived, spending hours on the beach and in the water. When he was five, his father was transferred to the U.S.S. Sutherland. He’d always been closer to his father than this mother and in his father’s absence, Andrew began to develop a closer bond with his mother.

Stuart played the violin, having considered becoming a professional musician before his Starfleet career, and when Andrew was 7, he began teaching his son. Andrew loved these lessons, loving the chance to spend time with his father during those occasions that Stuart was on Earth. He would add to his musical skills during the 2370s when he began taking guitar lessons while both his parents were on deployment.

In 2370, Marie was transferred from London to a ship-based assignment on the U.S.S. Venture. While the Galaxy-class starship would have allowed for Andrew to stay with his mother, neither she nor Stuart felt that life aboard a starship was suitable for a child, so Andrew went to live with his maternal grandparents during this time.

Andrew hated this time but the 2370s were a turbulent time for the Federation and neither of them had the luxury of being able to stay on Earth. He began spending more and more time locked away in his room working on computers. Andrew began creating simple computer programs at the age of 12 and was able to pull computers apart and rebuild them with upgrades by the age of 15.

Ever since learning of the existence of Lieutenant Commander Data at the age of 6, Andrew had been fascinated by the Android Starfleet Officer and during his teenage years, he read everything he could find on Data and his created, Doctor Noonian Soong. He even had the chance to meet Lieutenant Commander Data in 2372 during the commissioning ceremony of the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701-E and the holoimage of himself with data is still one of his most prized possessions.

In 2375, during the closing stages of the Dominion War, Stuart was killed in action. The ship he was commanding was destroyed during the Second Battle of Chin’toka and Stuart never made it to the escape pod. Marie was commanding the Olympic-class medical ship U.S.S. Hope at the time and was given an extended leave of absence to return to Earth and be with her son.

Andrew was devastated by the loss of his father and in the months following, he developed an antipathy towards the Dominion, particularly the Cardassians, an antipathy that he continues to hold. He blames them for giving the Dominion a foothold in the Alpha Quadrant, precipitating the War.

Never a particularly social person, Andrew struggled to make friends growing up and his social circle was never particularly large. His first relationship didn’t come until he was 19 and at Starfleet Academy. He met fellow Cadet Timothy Watson during his first year and they became friends over the course of the first year. It was during their second year that they grew closer and eventually started dating. Their relationship lasted 8 years but they felt that they were growing apart and decided to end their relationship but remain friends.

One of the things that continues to drive Andrew is the desire to honour the memory of his father and to make his mother proud.

Following in the footsteps of both of his parents, Andrew began classes at Starfleet Academy in 2378. His choice of career path was influenced by his hero, Lieutenant Commander Data; Andrew was to train to be an Operations Officer.

Andrew loved his time at the Academy, the chance to train with and learn about the most advanced computer technology in the Federation. He was in his element. Learning of the death of Data in 2379 greatly upset Andrew; he had always hoped that he would get to serve onboard the Enterprise under the Android Lieutenant Commander.

He got the chance to spend his third year at the Academy’s campus on Bajor. This was possibly Andrew’s favourite year at the Academy, and he developed a deep love of Bajor during this year. He returned to Earth for his final year and graduated in 2382 with a BSc in Computer Science and was commissioned an Ensign on the Intrepid-class U.S.S. James Lovell as a Computer Specialist within the Operations department.

Only months after graduating, Andrew began taking a distance learning Master’s degree in Artificial Intelligence. He was fascinated by the work that the Daystrom Institue was doing into synthetic life to aid in the Romulan rescue effort and that. Andrew spent two years as an Ensign until his promotion to Lieutenant Junior Grade and he earned his MSc in Artificial Intelligence. Only a few weeks later he began a distance learning Doctorate in Advanced Software Engineering.

Like everyone else, Andrew was devastated by the synth attack on Utopia Planitia; he lost a number of his friends in the attack. What made it worse was the Federation imposing a ban on synthetic life and the researching on such. Andrew felt that the decision was a knee-jerk overreaction to the attack, but he couldn’t do anything but complain about it.

A year after the synth attack on Mars, Andrew was promoted to Assistant Chief Operations Officer on the James Lovell. This only lasted until 2387, when Andrew was promoted to full Lieutenant and was transferred to the Galaxy-class U.S.S. Gemini as her Assistant Chief Operations Officer.

Andrew achieved his PhD in 2389 following the publication of his research thesis. At this point he considered resigning his commission and going to work for the Daystrom Institue but ultimately decided that his work in Starfleet was more fulfilling and he remained in Starfleet. In 2390 he was promoted to Chief Operations Officer of the Gemini.

He remained on the Gemini for a further 4 years before receiving transfer orders for the Ambassador-class U.S.S. Omaha.
