Morning Conversations

Posted on Mon Jun 28, 2021 @ 6:30pm by Lieutenant JG Walker Grey & Lieutenant JG Khylin Cooper

Mission: Episode 2: Cicada Summer
Location: Lounge
Timeline: Mission Day 1 at 0645

Khylin had just finished his work out and headed to the lounge to grab something to eat. Although his food replicator was working reasonably well, he enjoyed the hand made food that came out of the galley much better. Plus, it would give him a chance to work on his socializer skills, something that he was still working on. He entered the galley and grabbed a plate before heaping it full of eggs, and pancakes.

Walker found the lounge to be a fairly active place in the morning. He also found it to be a great place to observe the crew and interact with them. He found that certain departments stayed far away from the public relations officer; mostly it was the command and tactical department. Science and medical, on the other hand, appeared to have no problems talking to him. He scanned the crowd, eyes settling on the young chief science officer. As far as he could tell, the guy looked postively terrified in the social least that Walker had seen.

Vex jogged into the lounge, hoping that not all the food had been taken. He was fresh from his morning workout in the holodeck. Today he had immersed himself in an ancient Earth work of classic literature; something called the Lord of the Rings. He found the holoprogram addictive and silly at the same time. Glancing around he spotted the public relations officer. He was an attractive man, which probably explained why the chief engineer married him. He grabbed his food and headed towards him.

Walker saw the other man walking toward him and smiled. "Well, well, well someone from your department actually seeking me out. That's a first."

"Purely for social interaction," Vex replied. He gestured towards the empty chair across from Walker. "May I?"

"Of course," Walker said.

As soon as Vex sat down he spotted Khylin and gestured the young science officer over. For a moment it looked like he was going to hesitate but they overcame said fear and started toward their table.

"Sirs," Khylin said, as he approached. "Good morning."

"Have a seat," Walker said. "And relax a little."

Khylin forced himself to relax, it was just breakfast with two other members of the ships crew. He could do that. It wasn't that big of a least he was pretty sure that it wasn't. He sat down at the table and tried not to look as nervous as he felt.

"So, out for a jog?" Walker asked.

"Just finished in the weight room actually," Khylin answered. He looked over eat Vex. "Um, what about you?"

"I was slauthering Orcs on the fields of Rohan," Vex answered, stabbing some sausage with his fork. "It was a glorious battle."

"Um, is that an Unkari thing?" Khylin asked.

Walker laughed. "It's a human thing, from a book called Lord of the Rings. Ever hear of it?"

Khylin shook his head. "No, if it wasn't science based I didn't read it growing up."

"It's a shame," Vex said. "It's actually very good. I find most human literature has a certain flair that others lack."

"Is that so?" Walker asked, arching an eyebrow. "I would have thought that most cultures would find out stories boring. After all, we are still pretty young compared to other species that are galloping around the cosmos."

"Humanity has a certain flare...I mean look at what you all overcame as a speices. You helped found the Federation after war threatened to destroy your entire race," Vex said.

Khylin hadn't thought about it that way, although he supposed that Vex was correct. Looking back at humanity's history he was surprised that they had even made it as far as they had.

"I guess I'll have to check it out," Khylin said.

"Let me know and I'll go with you," Vex replied. "You never know when you could use a good dwarf on your side."

"Dwarf?" Khylin asked.

"Just look into it," Vex said. "How are things on the PR front?"

Walker shrugged. "Not too had actually. Its made easier by Captain Faulkner actually speaking to me when I ask and the fact that none of you appear to have a habit of disobeying orders."

"More exciting than engineering?" Vex asked.

"Depends on the day, my ex-fiance would most likely make my time in engineering very exciting...usually by throwing things at my head or trying to put me in a headlock."

"That sounds...interesting," Khylin said.

"May we live in interesting times," Walker said. "Any more updates from the research team about the blue goo?"

Khylin shook his head. "Nothing at the moment, although with as hush hush as they wanted it I'm not sure that they will be sharing much."

"That's a shame," Vex said. "It's an incredible piece of technology."

"And dangerous," Khylin reminded them both.

"That too."

"Let's hope our next mission isn't filled with so much peril," Walker said, rising his coffee mug.

"I'll toast to that," Khylin replied.
