Talking To The Shrink

Posted on Sun Jan 16, 2022 @ 8:04pm by Lieutenant JG Eddie Vasquez & Lieutenant JG Dessa McCallum

Mission: Episode 2: Cicada Summer
Location: Dessa's Office
Timeline: Mission Day 2 at 1800

Eddie had stepped away from astrometerics for a while, letting the computer chew on the subroutines that had finsihed working on. He wanted to go see Lt. McCallum before it got to late and while he would still speak coherently. He was sure that he was going to be in for a long night. Luckily, he had planned ahead and arranged for several peopl on the Omaha to watch Christopher just incase he ran into long nights. Which he knew he was bound to do being a department head now. He stopped outside her office door and tapped the door chime.

Dessa was just about to lock up for the night when a tapping sound got her attention.  Assuming someone was actually knocking instead of using the chime she called out, "Come in."

Eddie stepped into the office, doing his best to look relaxed and calm. He never really liked therapists offices, even if they had been helpful for Christopher...maybe it was a hold over from his days as a Marine.

"Lt. McCallum, right?" Eddie asked.

"That's me.  How can I help you?"  This man wasn't on her schedule.  That could mean that this was really important or he was nervous about getting his psych evaluation out of the way.  "Can I get you anything from the replicator?  Tea?  Cookies?"  Dessa often found that eating of drinking something took their mind off of nerves and allowed them to open up a bit more.

"Nothing to eat or drink for me," Eddie replied. "I was actually here to talk about my son, Christopher. The doc at my last posting said he would send his records over to you."

"Ah, well it's possible but I'm actually new here myself so I'm playing a bit of catch up.  I'd be happy to talk about it if you'd let me know the gist of the situation?  Or your concernes about it?"  Dessa sat down with her own cup of tea and tried to clear her mind to only focus on him.

Eddie tried not to act jittery, it was something that he was working hard on. Mostly because he didn't want to foster that kind of response in Christopher.

"Okay, well Christopher suffers from Burkey-Gilchrist Syndrome, are you familiar?" Eddie asked.

"No, I'm afraid not."  Dessa replied.  "What is it, if you don't mind me asking?"  Dessa crossed her legs and leaned in closer to the man.

"Genetic disorder, nothing life threatening but causes nerve damage that can hinder someone's ablility to walk and damages their vision," Eddie explained. "I mean looking at Chris you'd ever know it, he gets around pretty fast with his crutches and weekly injections help abate the vision issues."

"Most people with disorders do. It's remarkable. Was there something specific that you were concerned about in regard to his condition? Or were you just making me aware? Because I can tell you right now that what interests me is how well you adapt to it. How old is Christopher?"

Eddie shrugged. "I'm not actually concerned at all about him and his disorder, what I am concerned about is the sudden reappearence of his mom."

"Oh," Dessa said trying to hold back a chuckle.  "Perhaps I should just shut up and let you explain. This is your story after all."  She put her teacup down even, wanting her full attention to be on him.

"His mom left shortly after he was born," Eddie explained. "Up and disappeared for almost three years and then just randomly showed up again. She has this pattern of doing it and now that Chris is getting older, he's asking all kinds of questions about her."

"I'm sorry.  That must be very difficult for both of you."  Dessa wondered if he was asking for her opinion or merely stating fact. "Do you think Christopher would benefit from talking to someone, say a counselor about what he's feeling and his experiences?"

"Its what his last peditrician recommended."

"Well I'd be happy to," Dessa smiled.  She liked children and was an aunt several times over with two of her brothers. She would have them herself if she ever met the right person.  "I don't really have a full schedule yet so anytime you want to, or he wants to see me is fine by me."

Eddie nodded, feeling slightly better about his choice to bring Christopher onto the ship. "Cool, thanks. I'll send you a message as soon as I get my duty rotation figured out."

"Of course."  Dessa stood up as well.  "It was nice to meet you Lieutenant . . . ?"  Dessa knew it was a bad habit but she really preffered to call people by their first names. "You can call me Dessa."

"Nice to meet you Dessa."
